ABOUT LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Removing unwanted body hair is a constant hassle for many men and women. Luckily there is another option for patients who are tired of temporary, painful methods of hair removal. Laser hair removal is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that removes unwanted hair using intense pulsed laser energy.
At Indiglo Med Spa, we use the Candela GentleLASE advanced laser system for laser hair removal. This laser works to specifically target and damage hair follicles on the face and body to prevent regrowth, for a smoother area with reduced hair. Laser hair removal is most commonly performed on the face, upper lip, neck, chest, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line, and legs, although it can be performed on virtually any area with excess hair growth.
Using the top of the line Candela laser, we are able to treat all skin types safely and efficiently. With each quick and virtually painless treatment, patients can expect a 15% decrease in hair growth after each session resulting in less hair and finer regrowth.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Before treatment, hair may need to be trimmed since laser removal isn’t as effective on longer hair. A client will be given protective eyewear to protect the eyes. A test a patch will be done on the treatment area to determine the best settings for the individual as well as to check for any adverse effects. With controlled movements, the handheld device will be placed on the skin where short spurts of laser beams will work to damage the follicles. Sessions are relatively quick (sometimes only a few minutes) depending on the size and location of the treatment area. There is no required downtime and most patients can return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
ELECTROLYSIS
Electrolysis uses a low-level electrical current to eliminate the dermal papilla, part of the follicular connective tissue sheath, rich in blood and nerves that feed the growing hair. A fine, sterilized probe is inserted directly into the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft down to the dermal papilla. Once the dermal papilla has been eliminated, there is no way a hair can be regenerated from that follicle. Many hairs will be eliminated with only one treatment, but some will need two or more treatments to achieve permanent elimination. The number of treatments needed will vary depending on the amount and coarseness of existing hair.
Electrolysis is a great alternative to laser hair removal when the hair strand color is blonde or grey. A combination of electrolysis and laser can be a treatment plan if a client has a combination of dark, light, and grey colored hair strands.
The primary benefit of electrolysis is that it can remove any color hair in any stage of growth and the results are permanent. After a site has been effectively treated, the patient will not ever grow hair in that area for the rest of their life. The downside of this treatment is the fact that most people will need dozens of treatments in their lifetime; killing the follicles is a slow and meticulous process.
WHICH TREATMENT IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Both of these treatments are viable options for removing hair, and the answer may be complex. Your informed decision should be based on the color and texture of the hair and how large of an area must be treated. For those that simply want to thin out their hair in larger areas such as their legs, laser hair removal may be the right choice. Alternatively, electrolysis is a great option for smaller patches of hair that maybe the wrong color, but you would like to be removed for the rest of your life. Many times a combination of both treatments will yield the best results.
